Batman Vol 1 I am Rebirth. Is DC latest soft reboot post New 52 which ended up being a mixed bag overall. What wasn't was Snyder's run on Batman. Coming straight from Snyder's critical acclaimed run on Batman. Rebirth tells a different story with Tom king on the helm. It ended up being just okay.The story starts off with Batman pushing himself to the limit of what is humanly possible. There he meets Gotham and Gotham Girl the two characters at the forefront of this volume. Two new Superman like heroes on Batman's side. That's where the comic falls flat these two new heroes are boring. While the premise might be intriguing it but it ends up falling flat. Their origins are similar to Batman but altered a bit. After you get past the gimmick of they have superpowers you realize that their boring. At one point Batman calls the Justice League to fight Gotham the new male superhero and they were being beaten by him. It was at that point I realized Tom King was trying too hard to make the character interesting. The story goes on from there and at the end of it was just average not the worse but far from the best.The Art is good characters drawn well. Batman has a new Suit design and it just works. Colors are done well. A fantastic job by David Finch.In conclusion, I am Gotham is nothing special. For fans trying to get into the books you're better off starting off with Snyder's run as the volume mentions the past event such as Zero Year. For general fans, if you have nothing better to read than you could do worse I suppose. At the end it has the potential to become interesting down the line but for now it's the definition of mediocrity. Following a huge, introspective Batman run like Scott Snyder had has to be intimidating. How do you follow up a new and original take on a longstanding character like Batman? With another new and original take, apparently. King does not reinvent the wheel here, as all of the essentials are still in place; Batman is rich, Batman has stong hands, Batman punches people with his strong hands. Good stuff. What King does is change the focus the story goes with. His Batman primarily turns to a couple of things most Batman writers skip over; older silver-age villains and characters who are less grounded in realism or plausibility, and are instead more highly super-powered than standard Batman foes. Both work out well. For the former, you see the likes of Calendar Man getting a new, visually-interesting (and creepy) spin, and the beginning of a rather awesome running gag with Kite Man. For the latter, you see new heroes Gotham and Gotham Girl, who juxtapose human fallibility with Godlike capabilities rather well.The story also takes on classic ideas that feel new again when it's Batman undertaking them instead of, say, Superman. It's practically a right of passage for a powered hero to save a plane from crashing; it's a brand new sight to see Batman do so.My one gripe is that Gotham and Gotham Girl don't get a long period of time to really get established before certain materials hit the fan. Gotham gets more focus early on, but not quite enough to feel like we know him before the twist, whereas Gotham Girl doesn't really do very much until after everything strikes. Hopefully, we'll get to see her fleshed out later on in King's run, as there is certainly potential to be found.
