What a griping story of what America could look like and how community plays such a big role in life. Annette Mori weaves a story that is something beyond reality but hits so close we must think of what could be. Em and Lise have been in a bunker for 10 months since the USA was attacked. Failed leadership, intentional confusion and complete lack of knowledgeable people in government lead to grave weakness. Other Goverments attacked all of our strategic places bombing a good majority of the US. What is left are many militia factions who thrive on hate for order. There are communities that are trying to rebuild a life of acceptance, love and thriving for those who choose to work together. The Others intend to "rebuild" by marriage to young girls and/ or raping any woman along the way. In their male dominated world woman have no voice or life outside their pleasure. The things that are ok in this world should never been inflicted on anyone. The characters are strong women who will have to make harsh choices to survive in this new world. After leaving the bunker they come across a man who tells them they are trespassers. The story that unfolds is both gripping and beautiful. I do not want to give the story away so I will just say this dystopian story is magnificently told. The characters are speaking to both good and mean in human nature. It wrestles with the difficult questions and for me, asks some that challenge my heart. So well written you feel with the characters as they yearn for a better world. I love the way it unfolded, held my breath often and found it so hard to put down. It ended too soon, I fell in love with so many characters! Once again Annette has taken a unique storyline and turned it into something mindboggling. It left me thinking, "could this become reality"? I answered myself and said, "You darn betcha---it could"!!! When Em and Lise left their bomb shelter after the apocalypse, they were greeted by a strange new world. Not many people around but they found a few who were trying to make a new life for themselves in a small commune. There was a lot of making do with what was on hand. Not an easy life but satisfying. I really liked Trina and Hannah. A young spitfire named Harley was a favorite of mine. There is some drama and a fair amount of angst that was somewhat terrifying. This is by no means a romance but it truly is a very well told story of love and acceptance. The main characters were 40 ish who had been together for some years. While the story is not one I would want to live in real life, it gives me hope that anything is possible. Loved the epilogue!
